THE STORY BEHIND SPINE STRENGTH
By John Hickey
This spine biomechanics course was developed through my experience of suffering from a nasty back injury that required surgery to recover.
At the age of 22 I hurt my back from repetitive overtraining in martial art and strength. I had back pain, shooting pain down the legs, numbness and heaviness in my legs.
Not long after an MRI scan revealed that I had spiked a disc in the lumbar spine and it was compressing my sciatic nerve. I had surgery to get it fixed ad the doctors told me that I would never be able to compete again.
During that time I was very depressed but luckily I was studying sport science at the time and motivated by the injury I delved into spine biomechanics literature to learn everything I could about the human spine. What I found out next would change everything in a positive way
The revolution in training
After studying the anatomy and biomechanics of the spine and all of the data on injury mechanisms everything started to make sense. The reasons why the spine becomes injured started to become clear.
And I was shocked to find out that alot of martial art training , athletic training and especially yoga are all actually full of the spine damaging movements. It was absurd to realise that almost all of the training which people were using to get healthier, fitter and more athletic was actually making people worse!!
Fortunately I found safer ways to train that would not injure the spine and totally changed the way I trained. After the surgery I was able to rehabilitate my injury and carry on training.
The blessing in disguise
The amazing thing about learning spine biomechanics was that it not only made my training safer, it actually enhanced my strength and athleticism to levels beyond what I had before my injury.
This is beacuse the factors in avoiding spine injury lead to a more stable core and better power transfer through the body. Essentially It is hard to reach full potential in health, strength and athleticism without understanding the spine beacuse the spine is the core pillar of the human body.
Passing it on
Now Im very happy to pass on these lessons through the spine Strength course. It forms a key component of all the teaching at MMA Dojo and Majorly influenced the development of True energy yoga. .
